![]() The Art and Science of Yoga is a discipline that reaches back some 2500 years and touches us here in the present moment. There are many branches of yogic practice and as many styles of yoga as there are people doing the poses and studying the discipline as a whole. Hatha Yoga as taught in the Iyengar tradition takes time to align the body by teaching poses that bring a balance of length and strength to the muscles, as well as increased tensile strength to the bones. The nervous system is bolstered back to health in order to support all the other systems in the body. The mind begins to focus and the art of concentration is more available. The spirit expands. The Iyengar approach to hatha yoga offers each body, no matter the level of ability, the opportunity to experience the poses at the deepest level through the use of props: Belts, blocks, straps, sticky mats, and blankets. These props aid each individual body to receive the pose without compromise. The vary nature of prop usage induces a therapeutic element inherent in the overall practice of yoga. People suffering from injury, trauma, and chronic pain of any kind can receive benefit from the practice of hatha yoga.
“Put the words to the test of your experience. Do not be carried away by anyone else’s words. Rub yourself with each word through work and practice. Rubbing means to experience. Go with it! Find out! You develop original intelligence by rubbing the thought with the experience, and that originality is meditation.” |
